Former Weather Anchor Heidi Jones Gets Community Service

By DNAinfo Staff on October 26, 2011 5:32pm

MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A former weather anchor who admitted to filing a pair of false sexual assault complaints with police was sentenced to 350 hours of community service on Wednesday.

WABC anchor Heidi Jones, 38, pleaded guilty on Sept. 14 to two misdemeanor counts of falsely reporting an incident.

Prosecutors say the number of hours Jones will have to serve is based on the number of hours police spent investigating her two fake sex assault claims. She had told police that a Hispanic man tried to rape her in Central Park in September, and and then again in front of her building in November 2010.

The former newswoman, who was suspended from the station after her December 2010 arrest, admitted she fabricated the story when pressed by authorities about her claims.

"I did make this up. I made it up for attention. I have so much stress at work, with my personal life and with my family," she said when she was arrested.

Jones also apologized to investigators.
