TLC Head Thanks Cabbies for Efforts During Hurricane Irene

By DNAinfo Staff on August 30, 2011 8:40pm

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — David Yassky, head of the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission, was in Washington Heights Tuesday to thank livery drivers for their efforts during Hurricane Irene.

The commissioner shook hands and sent his thanks via dispatch microphone at the Riverside Radio Dispatcher on St. Nicholas Avenue and 192nd Street, according to his office.

Riverside is a member of the Livery Base Owners Coalition, which the TLC said in a statement “went above and beyond the call of duty in helping transport people out of at-risk, low-lying areas at the City’s request.”

Livery cabs, limos and commuter vans were also asked to pick up street hails during the storm to compensate for the lack of public transportation.

“We’re so grateful to the thousands of taxi, livery, black car and paratransit drivers who worked, sometimes to the point of exhaustion, to help their neighbors get to safety during those crucial hours before the worst of the storm,” said Commissioner Yassky.

“The City asked for their help, and once again they responded loudly and clearly that they were there for us.”
