FLATIRON — A man fell into an elevator shaft inside a Flatiron building across from Madison Square Park Thursday morning, fire officials said.

The man, who was not identified, fell inside of 200 Fifth Avenue, between 23rd and 24th streets, just after 10:15 a.m., the FDNY said.

Witnesses said the man was a welder, working on a construction site for the future women's clothing store Marimekko, who fell down the shaft into the basement. It was not clear what floor he was working on when he fell.

He was transported to Bellevue Medical Center and is expected to survive.

The Department of Buildings website listed an open complaint against the building Thursday after the incident for an open or unguarded elevator shaft. The DOB said it was conducting an investigation into the incident.

The address is shared by Mario Batali's Italian emporium Eataly and its rooftop beer garden La Birreria, as well as a bank and other companies.
