MANHATTAN — Eliot Spitzer's talking head days are over, at least for now, after CNN cancelled the show hosted by the former governor, Reuters reported Wednesday.

The cable network announced its fall schedule on Wednesday and revealed that Anderson Cooper's "AC360" will air in place of Spitzer's "In the Arena."

The program is the lowest-rated primetime show on CNN, according to Reuters.

CNN executive vice president Ken Jautz did not provide a reason for dropping the show in a memo to staffers Wednesday, but said they are in discussions with Spitzer about an “alternative role," according to Ad Age.

In his statement, Spitzer said he enjoyed his time with the network.

"We engaged serious people in conversations about national and global issues in a way that was informative and challenging," Spitzer said in the statement, according to Ad Age. "I believe that we provided diverse and valuable perspectives during the show's tenure."

Spitzer, who resigned in March 2008 in the wake of a hooker scandal, began his CNN career in October 2010 on the show "Parker Spitzer" with Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker. Spitzer's show was revamped when Parker left the show in February.
