Children Hurt in East Village School Bus Accident Updated May 25, 2011 10:02am

MANHATTAN — More than a dozen children were hurt when a school bus went over an East Village speed bump too fast Wednesday, the FDNY said.

The children, who were traveling to school at the Ross Global Academy on East 12th Street, were thrown from seats in the incident at about 8:30 a.m.

The accident happened at 10th Street and Avenue B, said the school's executive director, Richard Burke.

He said 13 of the 19 elementary and middle-school students on board received minor injuries, including bumps, bruises and bloody lips. The FDNY initially said 18 children were hurt.

All the injuries were considered minor, but the students who complained of being hurt were taken to area hospitals as a precaution, Burke added. He said their parents had been contacted.
