MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT —  A former radio show host who called himself the "Crossover Negro" is on trial for allegedly raping a child in his Upper East Side apartment seven years ago.

The on-air personality, Edward Hopkins, 41, is also charged with sexually abusing another young girl that same year, in 2004.

His trial opened Tuesday in Manhattan Supreme Court before Judge Daniel Conviser.

The girls, both 11 years old, were reportedly the daughter of his then girlfriend and a good friend of the girlfriend's daughter.

His lawyer argued he was a father figure to the two children he is accused of violating, the Associated Press reported.

Hopkins was a host on a WRKO-AM, a Boston station. He was ordered to be held without bail after his arrest on these charges in 2008 in Malden, Mass.
