MANHATTAN — Eliot Spitzer has come a long way since being forced to resign as governor following a prostitution scandal in 2008, but his comeback hit an obstacle Tuesday when it was revealed his application for the Harvard Club was rejected.

The Midtown club turned down Spitzer because club officials didn't want to be associated with the ex-governor's fall from grace, according to a source with the New York Times

For more than a year, Spitzer — who graduated from Harvard Law School in 1984 — has been steadily rehabbing his image, appearing regularly as a pundit on various political talk shows and, this month, he premiered his own CNN debate program, "Parker Spitzer."

Last year, Spitzer was even asked to speak about government regulation of the markets at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics.

But even that wasn't enough for the prestigious Harvard Club.

"It would seem that whoever made this decision at the club is not on the same page as the university itself," said Lisa Linden, Spitzer's spokeswoman.

When reached for comment, Nicole Parent, president of the Harvard Club, issued a statement.

"The proceedings of the Admissions Committee of the Harvard Club of New York City are confidential per the by-laws of the Club," she wrote in an email.
