MANHATTAN — A public service campaign condemning hate crimes in New York City will launch next week in response to a recent rash of anti-gay violence, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced Thursday.

The campaign, called "Love Love. Hate Hate.," aims to promote awareness through print ads emphasizing the words "Diversity, Strength, Love," to be placed at 100 bus shelters and 100 phone kiosks around the city.

Video ads will also be shown on nyc.gov.

The campaign comes on the heels of several attacks on the New York gay community.

In early October, two men were arrested for beating and robbing a gay man in the bathroom of Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village, while three men were allegedly beaten after seen kissing on the street in Chelsea. In the Bronx, a gang is accused of torturing three men because they thought they were gay.

Shortly after the attacks, Bloomberg vowed to stand by the city's gay community at the 30th Annual Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays New York City Awards Dinner.

"Government should not be in the business of telling anyone whom he or she can or cannot love," Bloomberg said.
