WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Calling all gifted pumpkin painters, pie bakers and scarecrow makers.

Organizers for the ninth annual Hudson Heights Harvest Festival at Bennett Park are looking for volunteers to help with an array of country-fair-style activities, including judges for pie baking, scarecrow making and pumpkin painting contests, puppeteers, children's book readers and musical performers.

The free festival, organized by community volunteers in collaboration with the Parks Department, will be held Oct. 9 in Bennett Park (Fort Washington Avenue between West 183rd and West 185th streets), the highest point in Manhattan at 265 feet above sea level, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. In case of rain, the festival will be relocated to nearby Fort Washington Collegiate Church (Fort Washington Avenue and West 181st Street).

Pie makers interested in entering the pie tasting contest are asked to bring their pies to the pie tent from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., after which local judges will rate the desserts from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Pie lovers can purchase slices for $1 a piece.

Those interested in participating can contact the volunteer committee by e-mail.
