CITY HALL — Mayor Michael Bloomberg feels for Rudy Giuliani, after the former mayor's daughter was arrested for shoplifting on the Upper East Side.

"Every parent has an enormous amount of sympathy," Bloomberg told reporters on Thursday. "You always worry about your kids. When your kids get in trouble, you do what's natural. You try to protect them."

Bloomberg has two daughters of his own, Emma and Georgina, with his former wife.

Caroline Giuliani, 20, was arrested Wednesday for shoplifting at an Upper East Side Sephora. The Harvard student allegedly took $100 worth of makeup from the cosmetics boutique, located at 144 E. 86th St. near Lexington Avenue, police said.

The store declined to press charges when they learned Caroline Giuliani's identity, but the NYPD arrested her at the store anyway, news sources said.

"I think this is a private matter that the Giulianis have to work through," Bloomberg said.

The NYPD issued Giuliani a Desk Appearance Ticket

that requires her to show up in court on Aug. 31 on charges including petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, which is typical for misdemeanor charges.
