MANHATTAN — Cases of romaine lettuce — found in many delis, restaurants and schools across Manhattan — have been recalled over fears of a potentially deadly E. coli contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Two people from New York are among the 19 people nationwide that have become sick from the bad lettuce, leading the FDA to recall greens sold in 23 states and the District of Columbia, the New York Post reported.
The recall includes shredded lettuce sold to schools, restaurants, wholesalers and delis by Freshway Foods, the FDA said on its website. Bagged and bulk lettuce sold in supermarkets was not included in the recall.
The New York State Public Health Laboratory discovered the bacteria outbreak on Wednesday.
E. coli infections often cause diarrhea but can lead to more severe complications including kidney damage or death.
