MANHATTAN — When Cameron Douglas begins his five-year prison stint for drug dealing, he might find his new home harsher than expected.

Lawyers for Douglas, grandson of Kirk Douglas and son of Michael Douglas, had requested that he serve his term in Lewisburg, Pa., but the 31-year-old “may not immediately qualify” for that prison’s minimum security designation, the New York Post reported.

A source “familiar with the federal prison system,” told the Post that the reason for this is likely ain incident during the summer of 2009 when Douglas arranged to have his girlfriend bring him heroin while he was living under house arrest. Court papers do not provide an explanation.

Douglas, who is also the stepson of Catherine Zeta-Jones, was sentenced on Tuesday following a January guilty plea for dealing methamphetamines and cocaine in large amounts.

In a five-page letter made public on Monday, Michael Douglas requested lenience, saying his son has battled drugs since age 13 and faces unique stresses because of his family lineage, the New York Daily News reported.

"He is an adult and responsible for his own actions," Douglas wrote. "We do know, however, that genes, family and peer pressure are a strong influence on a substance abuser."
