MANHATTAN — A man was struck and killed by a car while crossing Delancey Street early Monday morning, police said.
The unidentified man was hit by the white 2003 Mazda at the intersection with Essex Street, police said. The driver stayed at the scene and police believed the incident was an accident.
One westbound lane of Delancey Street remained closed Monday morning. Traffic was being diverted around the man's body, which still lay in the road under a sheet at 7:30 a.m.
The car was also there, and the passenger side of the windshield was smashed in. Blood was visible on the back of the car as well.
"I'm shocked," said Lisa Cole, a Ludlow Street resident who walks her dog on a morning route past the intersection. "It happened a while ago, why is the body still here? I don't understand why it's still here. This is a school route. This is a pretty traumatic thing for kids to see."
