MANHATTAN CRIMINAL COURT — One of three suspects in a fatal Upper West Side hit-and-run that killed an award-winning documentary film editor was charged with murder and arraigned on Sunday.
David McKie, 25, was allegedly in the black Dodge SUV that struck and killed Karen Schmeer, 39, who worked on the Academy-Award winning 2004 documentary "Fog of War."
McKie and two others were reportedly fleeing a nearby CVS pharmacy, where they had just stolen over-the-counter allergy medicine.
The getaway vehicle sped through traffic lights on Broadway and surrounding streets, weaved through traffic and eventually crashed between 90th and 91st Streets, near where Schmeer was mowed down by the erratic driver, prosecutors charge.
Schmeer was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Luke's Hospital.
McKie told police he was not the driver of the vehicle but the arresting officer saw him get out on the driver's side when he tried to get away on foot, according to the criminal complaint.
He is next scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
