MANHATTAN — President Barack Obama added his voice to the chorus of mourners grieving over the death of Jasmina Anema, a 6-year-old from Greenwich Village whose battle with cancer touched New Yorkers.

She was reportedly admitted to the hospital Monday and diagnosed with pneumonia. Her condition rapidly deteriorated after that.

The President released a statement Thursday.

"It is with great sadness today that Michelle and I extend our condolences on the passing of Jasmina Anema," he said.

"Jasmina showed tremendous bravery in the face of adversity, and her ability to stay positive throughout her battle was an inspiration to me and to all those she touched."

"As the parents of two young girls, our hearts particularly go out to Jasmina's devoted mother Thea. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and with all who knew and loved Jasmina."

Her mother, Thea Anema, wrote on Jasmina's blog that her daughter had died surrounded by people who loved her.

"Words can not describe the grief we all feel from the loss of our precious Jasmina," she wrote.
