MANHATTAN — Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer robbed New York of its favorite scandalous images during an interview that aired Thursday on bigthink.com, answering the question, "Was it true about the socks?" with a laugh and a definitive "No."

The image of Spitzer wearing mid-calf black socks during sex has haunted New York politics — until Thursday's remarks — ever since the ex-governor's mistress Ashley Dupre revealed the detail in March of 2008.

But during the interview, the disgraced ex-governor indicated that he had learned from his experience and said he was coming to grips with it, despite the knowledge that's he'll never be able to fully overcome the scandal.

“I have no illusions that I can ever get this piece of my life to fade significantly into the background," Spitzer said.

As for his advice for bedfellow-of-sorts Tiger Woods, who is currently embroiled in a sex scandal himself, Spitzer demurred, then said, "What I’ve tried to do is look within and that is where one must ultimately one’s sense of self and purpose and that’s all one can do."

As for how best to avoid scandal in the first place, Spitzer had these fine words of wisdom: "When you know it’s something stupid, don’t do it."
