MANHATTAN FEDERAL COURT — A former president of the union that represents mailroom employees at the city's largest newspapers has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $200,000 from the union.

Wayne Mitchell headed the New York Mailers Union No. 6, which includes workers at the New York Times, the Daily News and the New York Post.

In June 2008 an accountant called into question Mitchell's illegally excessive salary and apparent mismanagement of union funds. Mitchell also wrote himself and associates more than $200,000 over a roughly two year period, federal prosecutors charge.

Last month, the offices of the city's daily newspapers were raided as part of an investigation into the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers Union by the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

A spokesperson at the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan would not comment on whether the probes into the two unions were connected. They also would not say whether federal authorities were involved in last month's raids.
