MANHATTAN — A man who broke into an off-duty police officer's car, sparking a Harlem friendly-fire shooting in May was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in prison, according to published reports.

Miguel Goitia, 42, pleaded guilty to criminal mischief in September and was sentenced in Manhattan Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Goitia set off a tragic chain of events on May 28, when he broke into off-duty NYPD officer Omar Edwards' car. Edwards, 25, saw the break-in and gave chase with his gun drawn.

Officer Andrew Dunton, who was was on duty that night, mistakenly believed Edwards was an armed robber and fatally shot him.

The case raised questions of racial profiling becaues Dunton is white and Edwards was African-American.

A grand jury declined to indict Dunton.
