CHELSEA — A fire in a Chelsea office building forced the evacuation of hundreds of workers early Wednesday.

The fire started at about 8:15 a.m. at 111 Eighth Avenue near 15th St., fire officials said. It apparently started on the third floor where construction work was being done.

"I think the construction workers used the torch to cut the pipe and the fire started," a deputy fire chief said at the scene.

The fire was under control about an hour later, fire officials said.

The workers were allowed back into the building after the fire was put out.

A spokesman for Google, which owns the building, said the fire didn't cause serious damage.

"The matter was resolved quickly and nobody was injured," the spokesman said.
