MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — The trial of a man accused of beating a woman into a coma over an East Village parking spot will continue Monday — even though jurors said they were deadlocked.
The jury in the case of Oscar Fuller, 34, sent a note to Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Lewis Bart Stone on Wednesday indicating it could not reach a unanimous decision. It was ordered to to return to deliberations Monday, due to a court conflict Thursday and a Veteran's Day court closure Friday.
Fuller allegedly sent Lana Rosas, 25, into a coma for a week when he punched her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground and smack her head on the pavement in February.
Rosas, who did not testify at the roughly two-week trial, has had to wear a protective helmet since the alleged attack after part of her skull was removed because of brain swelling.
Her lawyer, David Oddo, has said she cannot even leave the house most of the time because she could die if she bumped her head.
Fuller has argued Rosas hit him first when they fought over the parking spot on East 14th Street. Rosas, he said, was standing in the spot to hold it for friends and refused to move when Fuller pulled up.
Fuller faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
