MANHATTAN — A group of self-styled revolutionaries is hoping to give the United States a "Tahrir moment" later this month by organizing an occupation of Wall Street — though they're yet to decide what the protest is about.
A loose coalition of online activists, along with alternative magazine Adbusters, are organizing the Sept. 17 protest. Like many of the revolutions across the Arab world this year, they envision setting up camp and staying there for months.
Their plan is to gather at least 20,000 supporters and echo a single demand ad nauseum until President Barack Obama gives it to them.
Participants can vote on what that demand should be on a Facebook poll, with options such as 'Revoke Corporate Personhood,' and 'Abolish Capitalism.'
"We [will] zero in on what our one demand will be, a demand that awakens the imagination and, if achieved, would propel us toward the radical democracy of the future," wrote organizers on the event's Facebook page.
Organizers are also using the Twitter hashtag #OCCUPYWALLSTREET to gather supporters, and have created a gathering page on social news site Reddit.
The Facebook event had roughly 6200 attendees on Monday.
