MANHATTAN — Police are hunting for a man who allegedly tried to hold up a Chase Bank branch at Eighth Avenue and 15th Street last week.

The suspect, 51-year-old Djamil Azizi, allegedly entered the bank on March 29 and passed a note demanding money. But he fled the bank before getting any cash, according to police reports.

Azizi is described as 6 feet, 1 inch tall, and 180 pounds.

The incident follows another robbery in Chelsea the week before, in which a different suspect forced money from a victim withdrawing cash on 24th Street between Sixth Avenue and Broadway.

Last week at a community council meeting of the 10th Precinct (which covers the portion of Chelsea bounded by Seventh Avenue), Deputy Inspector Elisa Cokkinos reported that while crime rates in the neighborhood are down overall, robberies remain a lingering problem.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
