UPPER WEST SIDE — There's a burger battle brewing near Columbia University.

Five Guys burger joint opens this Saturday March 12 at 11 a.m. on Broadway at West 110th Street, almost directly across the street from Mel's Burger Bar, which opened in August 2010.

The two red meat restaurants, just blocks from Columbia's campus, told DNAinfo last fall that they can happily co-exist.

"We think that there is enough demand for burgers for us to both thrive in this market," said John Z. Rigos, the Five Guys franchise owner who will open the Morningside Heights location.

Five Guys joins an already heated Upper West Side burger battleground, with Five Napkin Burger on Broadway and West 84th Street, and Shake Shack at Columbus Avenue and West 77th Street.

Upper West Siders now have many burger options to choose from, including Shake Shack, shown here.
