UPPER EAST SIDE — After a busy morning checking out the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2-year-old Sacha MacAdam knew an inspiring sight when he saw one. But it wasn't in the museum.

The boy made a beeline for the new Cake & Shake outlet after spotting the company's bright blue truck in front of the Met, near Fifth Avenue and West 79th Street. It was the eatery's opening day at its new location, and Sacha was the first customer.

"He said 'cupcakes!' when he saw the truck," said Reena MacAdam, Sacha's mom.

The little boy picked a "Whozeewhatsit" cake made with milk chocolate cake, caramel mousse and nougat frosting, and shared it with his mom.

Cake & Shake, which specializes in gourmet, organic cupcakes and shakes, inked a deal to sell in front of The Met with the Department of Parks and Recreation in April. Only one other vendor, a hot dog cart, is allowed to sell at the site.

"I'm feeling just a great sense of relief," said Gina Ojile, 41, who owns and operates the cart with her husband, Derek Hunt, 36. "It's been two years in the planning process."

The cart will set up at the north corner of the park every day at 9 a.m. and close up for the day at 7 p.m.

Sweet cakes including the Rich Guy, a mandarin cupcake with fig mousse and walnut cream cheese frosting, will be offered along with a rotation of two savory lunch cupcakes like the Toad in the Hole, a cake made with buttermilk biscuit, caramelized onions and beef sausage.

Four milkshake selections will also be rotated daily, featuring flavors like classic vanilla, wild raspberry and salted caramel.

The cart was eagerly anticipated by employees at the museum, who held a so-called "planning meeting" just so they could look at the menu, said Morgan Holzer, 30, who works in the digital media department.

"I just made this a spot on foursquare," Holzer said after grabbing a vanilla milkshake and moon cake.

"I plan on becoming the mayor," she said.
