MUNICIPAL DISTRICT — Police arrested 29 people as part of a drug ring that operated out of a housing project next to Lincoln Center and used high school students as dealers and look-outs, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Following resident complaints about used crack pipes in hallways and noise, investigators tracked more than 50 drug deals to the Amsterdam Houses, located between 61st and 65th streets, prosecutors said.
Three high school students were arrested in connection with the drug ring. The students attended Norman Thomas and West Side High Schools, which are not in the neighborhood, authorities said.
"Undercover officers observed the high school students being taught to handle money and speak to potential buyers," the Office of the Special Narcotics prosecutor said in a statement.
Five people were arrested on criminal complaints, 16 were indicted and eight others were picked up as investigators executed a search warrant.
Shahee Tate, 20, one of the high-level dealers in the operation, was arrested this afternoon in a cab at 125th Street and First Avenue, prosecutors said.
He faces up to 14 years in prison if convicted.
