QUEENS — An NYPD recruit was seriously injured when she was struck and dragged by a garbage truck driver who then left the scene outside the Police Academy in College Point on Monday morning, officials said.
The 35-year-old woman, whose name wasn't immediately released, was on her way to the academy when she hit by the truck as it made a right turn onto Ulmer Avenue off of 28th Avenue around 6 a.m., NYPD officials said.
The victim, who was in the crosswalk at the time, was dragged by the truck an unknown distance and was later taken to New York-Presbyterian Queens with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the NYPD said.
The driver did not remain at the scene, but investigators later tracked him down and determined he didn't know he hit the woman. He was not charged with a crime, police said Tuesday.
