Person Slashed Near Union Square, Police Say

MANHATTAN — A person was slashed in broad daylight near Union Square Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The victim was attacked by a bearded man in a plaid shirt on Fifth Avenue and 18th Street at about 3:30 p.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

The suspect, who appeared to be in his 50s, fled east on 17th Street. The victim was expected to survive, though details of the injuries were not immediately available, the spokesman added.

There was no immediate information on what sparked the attack.
