Bicyclist Struck by NYPD Car Racing to Scene Near Union Square: Police

By Trevor Kapp | August 31, 2017 8:23am

UNION SQUARE — A bicyclist was seriously injured after he was struck by a police car on the wrong side of the road racing to the scene of a suspicious package Wednesday, the NYPD said.

The 43-year-old cyclist was heading West on 14th Street near Fifth Avenue when he was struck by the eastbound police cruiser — which had its lights and sirens on — around 3 p.m., the NYPD said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital with head trauma in serious but stable condition, police said.

The NYPD car, which belonged to the 6th Precinct, was believed to have been traveling in the westbound lane to bypass traffic, sources said.

The call for the suspicious package at 14th Street and Broadway turned out to be unfounded, police said.
