QUEENS — A 21–year-old man who was disguised as a woman and carrying a gun when he got critically injured in a Jamaica shooting earlier this month, has died, police and sources said.
Terrence Payne, of South Jamaica, was armed and wore a wig, dress and purse as he walked on a Jamaica street on Aug. 18 around 9:30 p.m.
Sources said that Payne most likely was planning to rob or shoot someone when he got into a physical fight with another man in front of 104-46 164th St., between South Road and 107th Avenue.
That man was possibly acquainted with the person Payne was trying to ambush, sources said.
Then another person who was on the block at that time fired several rounds at Payne, hitting him in the left thigh, police sources said.
Police initially believed that it was a drive-by shooting, but on Wednesday an NYPD spokeswoman said it was not clear what exactly happened and that the investigation was ongoing.
Payne, a parolee who had gotten out of prison on June 15, was only wearing boxers and sneakers when he was brought to Jamaica Hospital by private car, police said.
He was listed in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries three days later, police said.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown, officials said Wednesday, adding that the victim has 10 prior arrests, mostly for criminal possession of a weapon and marijuana possession.
A gun was recovered from the scene, but it was not immediately clear whether it belonged to Payne or the gunman, sources said.
Payne's death has been ruled a homicide.
The gunshot was recorded by ShotSpotter, a gunshot-detection technology installed in Jamaica earlier this year, police said.
There had been no arrests as of Wednesday, officials said.
