BAY RIDGE — Murder charges were filed Thursday against a man who fatally stabbed a Department of Education employee who was living at the Bay Ridge apartment the suspect also shared with his mother and young daughter, police said.

Officials said 42-year-old Michael Dunne stabbed 52-year-old AnnMarie Vardy multiple times in the torso with a knife from the kitchen at 877 Bay Ridge Ave., near Ninth Avenue, on Wednesday morning, police said.

Vardy was pronounced dead on the scene, FDNY officials said.

She worked for the Department of Education, which declined to provide her role at the agency.

"We have lost a valued member of our community in this tragedy and we mourn with her family," said DOE chancellor Carmen Farina in an emailed statement.

Neighbors described Vardy as a friendly person who regularly chatted with fellow tenants.

"She was a sweet woman," said Susan Deluca, who lives in the building. "We talked a few times and she always seemed like good person to me. She didn't deserve that."

The stabbing occurred shortly before 7 a.m. in the Bay Ridge Avenue apartment. Both Dunne's mother and young daughter were present at the time of the stabbing, police said.

One neighbor described the suspect as a "tough guy."

"Mike was nice, but he was a tough guy," said the tenant who declined to give her name for fear of retribution. "He doesn't take crap from nobody, that's how he is."
