Driver Arrested For Running Over and Dragging Woman on Street, Police Say

By Nicholas Rizzi | August 3, 2017 9:51am

GRASMERE — A hit-and-run driver with a suspended license who mowed down a woman and dragged her body on a street was arrested Wednesday just hours after police released video of the crash.

Beatrice Tchoungoua, 22, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated unlicensed operator, failing to yield to a pedestrian and failure to stop at a stop sign for the July 14 incident, the NYPD said.

On July 14, Tchoungoua was driving a black Honda Accord when she ran a stop sign and crashed into the 62-year-old woman, who was trying to cross Clove Road and Woodlawn Avenue at about 8:02 a.m., police said.

Tchoungoua kept going, dragging the woman's body on the street, before fleeing south on Hylan Boulevard, according to police and video.

The victim was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Police released information about the crash Wednesday morning and arrested Tchoungoua at her Randall Manor home at 2 p.m., a spokeswoman for the NYPD said.
