MANHATTAN — A 55-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the torso in Midtown East late Tuesday night, police said.

The victim, whose name wasn't immediately released, was stabbed on East 43rd Street and Lexington Avenue, then staggered about two blocks to East 44th Street and Third Avenue, where EMS found him just minutes before midnight, police sources said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he died, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the attack. Detectives were canvassing Lexington Avenue between East 43rd and East 44th streets for surveillance footage Wednesday morning.

The victim had 17 prior arrests and was a registered sex offender, sources said.

No suspect description was immediately available.
