CROWN HEIGHTS — An NYPD sergeant shot a gun-wielding man in the thigh early Friday after he ran towards officers, ignoring commands to drop the gun, according to police.

Plainclothes officers from the Brooklyn North Gang unit were on patrol in Crown Heights early Friday morning when they heard gunshots near Rochester Avenue between Park and Sterling places at around 1:30 a.m., police said.

They drove to Rochester Avenue and saw a man fire at least one shot at another man he was chasing southbound on the avenue.

The man continued running toward police, ignoring officers who told him they were police and to drop the gun, according to Assistant Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, who spoke early Friday at the scene.

A sergeant with the unit then got out of his car, shot at the suspect at least two times, hitting him once in the left thigh area, police said.

He continued to run southbound on Rochester Avenue, dropping a .25 caliber gun and collapsing in front of 1525 Saint John's Place, police said.

He was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he is being treated for his injury. He has not been identified publicly by police.

The officers were taken to Cobble Hill Hospital for observations, although they were not injured.

Shot Spotter technology detected a total of six shots fired, although police are investigating if the man ever shot at police.

The Force Investigations Division and members of the 77th Precinct Detective Squad are investigating.
