Toddler Dies After Dad Breaks Her Skull on Father's Day, Police Say

By Katherine Lavacca | June 23, 2017 2:55pm

BROOKLYN — The 16-month old girl who was beaten by her father on Father's Day died from her injuries Friday morning, police said.

Nylah Lewis suffered a fractured skull, loss of oxygen to her brain, and bruising all over her body after the beating by her father, Shaquan Taylor, 19, prosecutors said earlier this week.

Nylah was taken to the Coney Island Hospital after the incident on Father's Day.

Nylah's mother was picking up the child from Taylor's Coney Island apartment when she saw the toddler unresponsive and having difficulty breathing, officials said. The mother, who has an order of protection against Taylor, was allegedly assaulted by Taylor before his arrest.

Taylor was charged with assault causing injury — a felony — as well as criminal contempt and menacing, according to court records. He faces at least seven years in prison if convicted on the felony charge, records said.

Taylor had previously appeared in court for trespassing and robbery, but had no prior record of domestic abuse, according to police.

Taylor's case was in the process of being moved to state Supreme Court on Friday. A spokesman from the DA's office said they will seek to upgrade the charges in the grand jury.
