LOWER EAST SIDE — A man accused of brutally beating a 61-year-old woman near Sara D. Roosevelt Park last month has been indicted on an attempted murder charge, according to the Manhattan District Attorney.

Devin Brown, 24, now faces up to 25 years in prison as a result of Wednesday's indictment that was handed down in a New York Supreme Court. He had previously been charged with assault and attempted robbery for the attack, and was indicted on those charges as well.

Brown attacked the woman as she walked near Forsyth and Stanton streets on May 20 around 6 a.m., knocking her to the ground to rifle through her pockets, and continuing to punch and kick her, prosecutors said.

Brown only stopped the beating when approached by a witness, who police said caused him to flee by yelling at him. The witness called police, who arrested Brown at a nearby deli, prosecutors said.

The victim was left with bleeding in her brain, and was still hospitalized as of Wednesday, according to prosecutors.

“The details of this senseless attack are truly shocking — the defendant is accused of continuing to assault the victim as she lay motionless on the ground," said District Attorney Cyrus Vance in a statement. "No one should have to fear walking our City’s streets and my Office will continue to vigorously prosecute anyone who threatens the safety of our citizens.”

Brown pleaded not guilty and was held on $500,000 bail at a Rikers Island, prosecutors said. He due back in court Aug. 2.

Brown's lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.
