UNION SQUARE — A woman snagged a cellphone and backpack left by a straphanger on a subway platform in the Union Square station Wednesday, police said.
The 30-year-old female commuter was sitting on a bench waiting for a southbound 4 train around 12:35 a.m. when she placed her cellphone and backpack on the seat next to her, police said.
She then boarded a 4 train, leaving her belongings on the bench, according to authorities. By the time she realized her mistake and returned to the platform, her possessions were missing, police said.
The NYPD released surveillance footage of a woman described as being in her 30s pocketing the phone and taking the backpack from the bench.
The suspect was described as having black hair, wearing a dark gray sweat jacket, blue pants and gray sneakers, and carrying a green and blue shopping bag, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
