UES Pair Arrested After Torturing Toy Poodle for Peeing on Floor, NYPD Says

UPPER EAST SIDE — Two Upper East Side roommates were arrested after "disciplining" their toy poodle by placing it on a bathroom shelf — leaving it to fall and break numerous bones and suffer head trauma, authorities said.

Isis Mensah, 25, took her 9-month-old toy poodle Storm to the Animal Medical Center at 510 E. 62nd St. on April 18, where veterinarians found that four of the dog's ribs and his pelvis were broken, along with having serious brain trauma, police said.

Mensah, of East 61st Street, told police that she disciplined Storm for peeing on the floor by putting him on a 6- to 7-foot-high shelf because he's afraid of heights. The puppy fell off the shelf and hit a bathtub, a criminal complaint said.

The dog was in such extreme pain that he was unable to walk and had to be sedated with painkillers, the complaint noted.

Veterinarians realized that his injuries were consistent with non-accidental blunt force trauma and were in various states of healing, indicating that they had happened over a period of time, they told authorities.

Mensah and Kwadwo Mensah, 26, with whom she lives and owns the dog, were arrested on April 19. They were charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and torturing and injuring an animal, among other charges, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said.

Both were released without bail and are due back in court on June 7. Their attorneys did not immediately return calls for comment Friday.

Storm is expected to make a full recovery at the ASPCA, officials said.

The 19th Precinct Tweeted about the arrest last week.
