UPPER WEST SIDE — A man was fatally stabbed in an argument outside a restaurant on Broadway on Thursday night, police said.

Special Anthony Stewart, 24, was feuding with someone who stabbed him twice in the torso outside La Nueva Victoria Restaurant at 2536 Broadway, near West 95th Street, minutes before 11 p.m., NYPD officials said.

"I heard a lady screaming, 'Stay on the ground! Stay on the ground!' Then I saw he was laid on the sidewalk. He was breathing heavy. His chest was moving. He was on his back," said George Wheaton, 33, who lives near the scene.

Wheaton watched as a good Samaritan lifted up Stewart's black shirt in a bid to help, he said.

"The lady was on the phone describing what was going on. She was doing the best she could," Wheaton said.

Stewart, who lived nearby on West 103rd Street, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai St. Luke's, police said.

The suspect fled north on Broadway and hadn't been arrested as of Friday morning, according to police, who did not provide a further description.

Investigators were canvassing the area for surveillance footage Friday morning, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.

It wasn't immediately clear what the two were arguing about.
