MIDTOWN — The Washington Heights man accused of stabbing a tourist in Midtown last year will serve six years in prison after taking a plea deal, the Manhattan District Attorney's office said.

Steven Tlapanco, 20, pleaded guilty to first degree attempted assault in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday and took the judge's deal of serving six years in prison with five years of probation, according to the DA.

Tlapanco turned himself in after stabbing the 23-year-old tourist in the head at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 46th Street on Dec. 18, police said.

The newly engaged victim, from Washington state, and his fiancée were walking in the area when they realized a man was trailing them. Tlapanco rushed forward and plunged a knife into the back of the victim's head near the base of his skull, according to a police report.

The victim was treated and released.

Tlapanco's sentencing is set for May 24.
