Jackson Heights Teacher Arrested After Assaulting Student, NYPD Says

By Ben Fractenberg | April 27, 2017 8:05am

QUEENS — A public school teacher was arrested after assaulting a student inside a Jackson Heights middle school, according to police.

Ramiro Cruz, 52, became irate after the student wrote down what he was saying on a piece of paper inside I.S. 145 on 80th Street near Northern Boulevard at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Cruz forcefully grabbed the student’s left hand, spraining a middle finger.

The teacher was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault.

The Department of Education said it has removed Cruz from the school.

“There is no place for this alleged behavior in our schools and Mr. Cruz was removed and reassigned away from students pending the resolution of his criminal case,” DOE spokesman Michael Aciman said in a statement.
