Parents Arrested for Drowning Death of 10-Month-Old Girl, NYPD Says

BROOKLYN — The parents of a 10-month-old girl were arrested Thursday, six months after she drowned in their Red Hook home, NYPD officials said.

Roxanne and Daniel Hernandez left Meilani Hernandez alone with her 3-year-old brother in the bathtub of their Henry Street apartment, near West Ninth Street, on Nov. 6, police said.

When they went to check on the kids, Meilani was unconscious, authorities said.

Medical responders took her to Methodist Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Meilani's death was ruled a homicide in March, a Medical Examiner spokeswoman said.

The Hernandezs were arrested Thursday for reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child younger than 17, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear why it took so long for police to arrest her parents.
