QUEENS — A new restaurant offering sandwiches and salads with a Middle Eastern twist is set to open in a couple of weeks in Kew Gardens.

Shawarma & Grill, at 116-03 Metropolitan Ave., will focus on shawarma sandwiches, but it will also serve breakfast items, like waffles and omelets.

Owners Sara and Frankie Flahat are still working on finalizing the menu, but in addition to items featuring shawarma, it will also include sandwiches with grilled chicken, spinach and feta cheese as well as with ground beef and cubes of potatoes, they said.

The eatery will also boast a salad bar.

“People will be able to choose from the salad bar what they want to put on their sandwiches or their omelets,” said Sara Flahat, whose husband has worked as a deli grill person for years.

The couple, who lives in nearby Glendale, decided to utilize his experience and open their own business, they said.

They thought Kew Gardens would be a perfect location because the neighborhood does not have a Middle Eastern sandwich shop as of now.

They remodeled the space, which was formerly occupied by L’Angolo Pizza & Pasta, so that patrons will be able to watch them cook.

“We will be cooking right there in front of you,” Flahat said. “We want people to see what they are going to eat.”

In the future, the owners are also planning to apply for permits to add an outdoor seating area.

Flahat said they hope to open the eatery by the end of April or early May.
