WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A 25-year-old male driver was killed and two women critically injured after their car collided with a tractor-trailer in a hit-and-run near the George Washington Bridge early Monday, police said.
The truck driver was heading west on the Cross Bronx Expressway when he struck the Toyota sedan as he approached the George Washington Bridge at about 2:40 a.m., police and fire officials said.
The truck’s driver, 23, fled after the crash, but he was later arrested near the Vince Lombardi Rest Stop by Port Authority Police on drunken driving charges, Port Authority Spokesman Joe Pantangelo and NYPD officials said. The driver is from Durham, North Carolina.
The women, ages 28 and 39, were taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition but were expected to survive, police said. The man was also taken to Harlem Hospital but couldn’t be saved.
Identification of the driver who was killed was pending family notification, according to police.
