BROWNSVILLE — An elderly woman was killed on Atlantic Avenue after being struck by a truck Thursday afternoon, police said.
The 81-year-old had left the crosswalk at the intersection of Atlantic and Rockaway avenues around 3:30 p.m. when a delivery truck hit her, according to officials.
The 2017 Ford was traveling northbound on Rockaway Avenue with the green light and the driver made a left turn onto westbound Atlantic Avenue when it struck the victim, an NYPD spokeswoman said.
Police did not release the woman’s name pending family notification.
She was knocked down and the truck’s left rear wheel ran over her, according to an NYPD spokeswoman. Emergency responders found her unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to her head and torso.
EMS workers rushed her to Brookdale Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Two pedestrians have been injured at the intersection this year, according to the city’s Vision Zero map.
Throughout the city, the number of pedestrian deaths this winter has dipped from a year ago, which officials attributed to the mayor’s “Dusk and Darkness” traffic safety initiative, which launched in November.
The 36-year-old truck driver from Thursday’s incident remained at the scene, according to officials, and had not been charged as of Friday morning. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
