The Romney family is in pursuit of one of the world's most expensive sports collectibles: a stake in the New York Yankees.

The family of the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 presidential candidate is bidding for a 1 or 2 percent share of the team, which is valued around $3 billion or more, according to a report from Fanrag Sports Network.

A lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, Romney himself reportedly denied involvement in the emerging deal. But his oldest son, Tagg, and the family company, private equity firm Solamere Capital, could shell out $25 to $35 million per percentage point for the Bronx Bombers, according to the report.

The Yankees did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Romneys have been shopping for a baseball franchise share for months and were considering a purchase of the Miami Marlins.

According to Forbes' rankings, the Yankees are Major League Baseball's most valuable team, ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox. The team's majority share is owned by the Steinbrenner family.
