QUEENS — Police released a surveillance image of several suspects who they said were holding toy guns in the stairwell of a Jamaica housing complex last week, prompting officers to open fire, authorities said.

The incident took place on Feb. 15, around 7:45 p.m., when the officers were responding to a call about people fighting and using drugs in the stairwell of the South Jamaica Houses at 106-35 159th St., near South Road, police said.

As they were checking the building, they encountered three men in the hallway with what appeared to be guns, officials said.

The officers drew their own guns and ordered the men not to move, but instead the suspects pointed what seemed to be firearms at the officers, officials said.

One of the officers then fired a single round, which didn’t strike anyone, police said.

The suspects then fled in an unknown direction, authorities said.

The officers later caught one of them, but two other suspects escaped and were still on the loose as of Thursday morning, police said.

Two toy guns were recovered at the scene, authorities said.

Police described the suspects who are still on the loose as being between 14 and 19 years old.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
