QUEENS — NYPD officers opened fire on a group of men holding toy guns in the stairwell of a Jamaica housing complex Wednesday night, police said.

The officers had received a call about people fighting and using drugs in the stairwell of the South Jamaica Houses at 106-35 159th St., near South Road, about 7:43 p.m. and were checking the stairwell when they encountered three men, NYPD officials said.

One of them turned toward the officers while holding what appeared to be a gun, and an officer fired a single round, missing the trio, police said.

Two of the men managed to escape, but the officers caught one of them and confiscated two toy guns, authorities said.

It wasn't clear which of the suspects was holding the fake weapons.

The escaped suspects hadn't been caught as of Thursday morning, police said.
