Repeat Felon Sentenced to 42 Years to Life for Knifepoint Robbery, DA Says

By Nicholas Rizzi | February 9, 2017 4:02pm

STATEN ISLAND — A repeat felon was sentenced to 42 years to life behind bars after he robbed a man at knifepoint in the victim's home, Staten Island's District Attorney Michael McMahon announced.

Steven Bloome, 35, was sentenced to prison Wednesday by Judge Wayne Ozzi after he was convicted of two counts of robbery for the 2015 incident.

On Nov. 20, 2015, Bloome went to his former brother-in-law's house on Treadwell Avenue at 4 a.m. and started banging on the door demanding money, a law enforcement source said.

The victim asked him to leave and Bloome pulled out a knife and stole $1,500 and jewelry from him, prosecutors said.

The victim's wife and daughter were inside the home at the time and his daughter called 911 while they hid upstairs, prosecutors said.

Police responded and arrested Bloome at the scene.

"Robbing a man at knifepoint inside his own home is a disturbing and cowardly act," said McMahon in a statement.

"Even more troubling is the fact that the victim’s wife and child were home at the time of this incident, terrified for their lives. This defendant, who has a long criminal history, will now spend 42 years to life behind bars for his heinous crimes."

Bloome is considered a "mandatory persistent felon" because he was previously convicted three times for robbery, assault and attempted robbery, McMahon said.

He was jailed in 2001, 2004 and 2014 on those charges, according to the Department of Corrections.

For his latest conviction, Bloome was sentenced to 21 years to life for both robbery charges to run consecutively, prosecutors said.

He was also sentenced to 21 years to life for violent felony charges, two to four years for a weapons charge and six months for a misdemeanor charge that will run concurrently with the others.
