THE BRONX — Police arrested a man more than a month after he chased another man and fatally shot him in the back in Tremont, officials said.

Michael Matos, 20, gunned down Corey Smith, 24, in a drug-related robbery near 175th Street and Crotona Park North about 8:24 p.m. on Dec. 20, NYPD officials said.

Smith, of Soundview, was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital, police said.

A witness recognized Matos and identified him to police, an NYPD spokesman said.

Matos, of Wakefield, was arrested on Jan. 27 and charged with murder, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the shooting.

Matos is being held at Rikers Island and due back in court on Thursday, jail records show. He's also being held on marijuana and disorderly conduct charges.

It wasn't immediately clear what those charges stem from.

Matos has been arrested 10 times since 2013, mostly on drug charges, but additional details were not immediately available, an NYPD spokesman said.

He had been arrested in June on charges of obstructing governmental administration, the spokesman said. Details of that incident were not immediately available.
