MURRAY HILL — A Third Avenue D’Agostino will reopen with the same name — but under new management, according to supermarket maven John Catsimatidis.

The D’Agostino supermarket at East 35th Street and Third Avenue, which closed its doors last year, will reopen under the D’Agostino brand but operated by Catsimatidis’ Red Apple Group, the Gristedes magnate, radio host and one-time mayoral hopeful told DNAinfo New York.

“We know people liked that location, so we decided to bring it back under the D’Agostino brand,” he said.

The new store will be up and running in “the next few months,” according to Catsimatidis.

The Third Avenue store shut down in August as part of a city-wide downsizing by the financially strapped grocery chain, which announced last February a plan to close some stores and slash jobs at others.

Manhattan residents have complained in recent years of a trend of vanishing supermarkets, but the 30 blocks along Third Avenue have been largely spared thanks in part to the opening of a new Trader Joe’s at East 32nd Street and Third Avenue, to the delight of neighbors.

Representatives of D’Agostino did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
